Over the past 15 years or so, I've occasionally reported on hacktivism and hacktivists.  And as anyone on Telegram these days has seen, there are a lot of politically oriented hacktivist channels. 

If you are involved in hacktivism or are thinking of getting involved in causes you believe in, I'd encourage you to take a few minutes and read an article by  Jesse William McGraw. He began to suspect that some hacktivist groups were being manipulated by untrustworthy hands and that some Ukrainian intelligence officers or soldiers in these groups were not really Ukrainian intelligence or soldiers.  

So he decided to run a little experiment... and sure enough, he found well-intentioned hacktivists were really susceptible to being misled or misdirected. 

The same risks would apply to any hacktivist group or channel. Who is or are the leaders? Who is giving out or suggesting targets? How trustworthy or knowledgeable are they really? 

If you get involved or want to get involved, make sure you're not being played or you might actually be harming those you hope to help.

Interesting work, obviously those trendy and popular groups with a names have been used and utilized by various actors such as nation-states, multinational corporations and so forth

so many people just want to be told where to go and what to do, so they dont have to make any higher level strategy decisions
