The 25-year-old man, Erkan Sezgin, was known as “DataBox” on RAIDforums when he listed the data of millions of Austrians for sale.  But that was just one of a number of databases they caught him with, it seems. 

He was charged with five different charges. He was acquitted on one and found guilty on the other four. 

The translation of the court's sentencing today reads:

"All things considered, the court finds a prison sentence of 36 months, less pre-trial detention, of which 12 months suspended with a probationary period of 3 years, is appropriate and necessary."

Keep in mind that he was also a suspect in a second and seemingly bigger case and could be charged in that one, too, but I don't have an update on that case yet or know whether he is still a suspect in that one.

The GIS data hack was discovered when the Experten des Bundeskriminalamtes (BK) (in English Federal Criminal Police Office) discovered someone wit the pseudonym ‘DataBox’ in a dark net marketplace offering the Austrian data for sale.
In what was eventually a successful sting operation, authorities bought the data, which gave them the ability to learn more information about the person offering it for sale.

After a thorough international investigation involving authorities from several countries, a 25-year-old Dutch man was ultimately arrested for the data theft.

How they got him?

According to Dutch news media,  he was caught when Austrian agents pretended to be buyers of the Austrian GIS data “and eventually ended up in Almere. S. does not deny that he wanted to sell the dataset and offered other sets for sale.” 

Meeting and trying to sell to undercover agents tends to have poor outcomes for the seller.....
