A lot depends on the file size and the characteristics of your system

as others have said, it depends on the file what your computer can handle. i've got a bad computer with plenty of space but that's about it so, i break up files with this script below (c#). transformer is a function for when lines need to be entirely transformed like, say it's supposed to be comma delimited with quotes but there's no escape so i need to validate it first, or create multiple lines from a single...like if theres the columns last_name, maiden_name and i want to see them as two separate rows to denormalize them.

        static async Task split_file(string largeFile, Func<string, string> transformer, int trigger = 1000000, string destFilePattern = @"poop:\split up file - {0}.txt")
        {
            int i = 0;
            int currentSplit = 0;
            StreamWriter writer;
            writer = File.CreateText(String.Format(destFilePattern, currentSplit));
            try
            {
                using var fs = File.OpenText(largeFile);
                string ln;
                while ((ln = await fs.ReadLineAsync()) != null)
                {
                    await writer.WriteLineAsync(transformer(ln));
                    i++;
                    if (i % trigger == 0)
                    {
                        writer.Flush();
                        writer.Close();
                        currentSplit++;
                        writer = File.CreateText(String.Format(destFilePattern, currentSplit));
                    }
                }
                Console.WriteLine($"{i.ToString("N0")} lines");
            }
            catch (Exception e)
            {
                Console.WriteLine($"Failed to split on like {i.ToString("N0")} because {e.Message}");
            }
            finally
            {
                writer.Close();
            }
        }

also, fwiw, .sql files are usually code files containing sql. if you have a file that large, it probably should've been exported differently and can be cleaned to get rid of a lot of sql overhead. if you're on windows, you can just use powershell to look at the first 10 lines or so to see if its sql and where you can start cleaning.

Previewing a very large
.sql
file can be challenging due to its size, which might cause standard text editors to crash or become unresponsive. Here are several methods to efficiently preview and manage a large
.sql
file:
There are online tools and scripts that allow you to preview large files by reading them in chunks, but these can have limitations based on the file size and may pose privacy concerns. The best method depends on the file size, system resources, and specific requirements. For quick previews, the
head
,
tail
, or
less
commands are effective, while for deeper inspection or editing, a dedicated lightweight text editor or database tool is more suitable.
