The main purpose of the User-Agent header is to provide Web Server with information about your OS and Browser. Not all browsers are behaving the same way. Some scripts/html code may look different or may not work at all. In the old days (when User-Agent header was created) it was a much larger problem than right now. Browsers had their onw features, not supported by other browsers. In oderd for the web page to work - different code need to be used for the different browsers.
