I’m currently managing an environment with 50+ Windows VMs running on VMware ESXi. The systems are running smoothly, but I have a new requirement for our outbound networking.
The Goal: I need to route all outbound traffic from these VMs through specific external egress points (specifically using a SOCKS5-based upstream relay).
The Requirement: Rather than configuring each Windows instance individually, I want to handle this at the infrastructure level. I’m looking for a way to implement a Transparent Gateway so that the VMs simply use a local IP as their default gateway, which then handles the relay to the external nodes.
Environment Details:
Does anyone recommend a specific virtual appliance (like pfSense or a custom Linux build) that excels at handling high-volume SOCKS5 relay for multiple clients? Are there any "gotchas" regarding DNS leaks when forcing all guest traffic through an external exit node in an ESXi environment?
Would a Layer 5 Circuit Gateway be the most efficient way to handle this, or should I look into a different routing architecture?
