In a recent crackdown on cybercrime, three individuals were apprehended following an investigation into a massive data breach at the entity France Travail, according to a statement from the Paris prosecutor's office.
These individuals, arrested on Sunday, March 17, are suspected of playing a key role in this security incident, which led to the unauthorized disclosure of sensitive personal information. They are scheduled to appear before an investigating magistrate on Tuesday, with the prospect of formal charges.
The suspects, originating from Yonne and Ardèche and born between 2000 and 2002 (21, 22, and 23 years old), face serious charges, including unauthorized access and maintenance in a computer system, data extraction, fraud, and money laundering, all of which are exacerbated by their alleged collaboration as an organized group. The prosecutor's office emphasized the seriousness of the charges by requesting their placement in provisional detention.
The origin of this case dates back to March 8, when France Travail alerted the CNIL to a breach in its computer security, discovered within its own database. Shortly thereafter, the Cybercrime Fighting Brigade (BLC2C) of Paris was tasked with the investigation, revealing that accounts of Cap Emploi employees had been exploited to steal approximately 43 million personal data between February 6 and March 5. This data included highly confidential information, such as names, first names, contact details, social security numbers, and specific identifiers for France Travail.
Thorough investigation, supported by technical analysis and telephone inquiries, led to the identification of the suspects. Searches at their homes and the inspection of their computer equipment revealed the involvement of some in fraud schemes, including phishing.
