TikTok has announced that its first European data center in Ireland is now partially operational, with the migration of user data underway. The data center, originally expected to open in early 2022, faced delays and is now projected to be fully operational by Q4 2024. TikTok plans to have two additional data centers in operation by that time, one in Ireland and another in Norway powered entirely by renewable energy.
As an interim measure, TikTok has started storing European users' personal data in a secure enclave located in the U.S. This temporary solution aims to address security concerns, particularly regarding access to user data by employees based in China.
TikTok's efforts to enhance data privacy and security in Europe are part of Project Clover, which includes new data access and control processes. The company has engaged NCC Group, a UK-based information assurance firm, to perform ongoing security assessments and real-time monitoring of its data controls and infrastructure. TikTok intends to collaborate with European policymakers to explain its new data security system further.
