A Bombardier CRJ700 operating a regional flight for American Airlines collided in midair with a military helicopter at Ronald Reagan Washington International Airport. The plane was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, while the helicopter was carrying three military personnel. Both aircraft crashed into the Potomac River.

D.C. Fire Chief John Donnelly said rescuers have pulled 27 bodies from the plane and one from the helicopter from the river.

“We are now moving from a rescue operation to a recovery operation. At this point, we believe there are no survivors in this crash,” he said at a press conference Thursday morning (quoted by CNN).

NBC News4’s Washington affiliate previously reported that more than 30 bodies have been pulled from the river. No survivors have been found yet.

Shortly after the crash, Senator Roger Marshall suggested that most, if not all, of those on board were killed.

The search is being complicated by the darkness and freezing temperatures. Donnelly previously said about 300 rescuers in rubber boats had been sent out to search for survivors.
