Why do we chase the approval of other people?

At least many do, including myself. It's not necessarily super apparent, but deep down, I think we all want to be approved of or liked by others.

I used to struggle with pretty bad social anxiety. The type that was like, I have to say the right things, be funny, be kind, so that other people will like me. Nowadays it's much better, but I still feel that sometimes I seek out approval to the point where my own happiness is effected.

I guess looking at evolution it makes sense. We want to be a part of a group, to be protected. But in the modern day, whether a stranger likes you or not doesn't matter. And funny enough, a lot of times we value the opinions of strangers more.

Another thing I think about sometimes is, once you truly know someone, you worry less about their judgement. No matter how attractive, rich, well-dressed, intimidating a person seems. Once you get to know anyone, you realize they're just a normal human and they have their own issues and flaws.

I believe that there are different factors associated with the need to have approval like upbringing or narcissistic personality disorder. If your parents neglected you are a child you might be hungry for their approval, some attention....

"Survival" instinct. Humans are social creatures.
We survived back then because we banded together into groups to defend each other etc.

We're ultimately a bunch of hairless monkeys that survive thanks to living in tight-knit communities. We are social creatures, as TerrorBird said.

The fear of being disapproved is a real ancient terror, for being an outcast used to be a death sentence. Today, being an outcast still isn't great, but at least you won't get eaten by wolves.

I crave to be loved. It makes me feel safe. If everyone likes me I won't ever be rejected. Maybe I should become a cult leader. Get some devotees.

the issue with me is that i seek approval from my current partner and if i don't get it, i start thinking that there's something wrong with me. it's not so bad that i start having a breakdown but i do end up thinking more than usual and i'm trying hard to work on it

It's because the brain produce dopamine every time people get social approval.
