Windows Defender seems fine for windows.
If you need it for Linux, clamav/clamtk
Not sure about mac but I think clamav is on that too.

Malwarebytes (free version) is a decent one if you want to have a backup

given that anti malware services work mostly by checking hashes and to a smaller extent sandboxing and checking the behavior of unknown programs it is best to just use the most popular anti malware services (which would be windows defender or clamav on linux)
i dont know why people are suggesting malwarebytes
unless it does something special or has a significantly larger database of hashes i dont see the point
virustotal is also a good resource to use on files before you run them

but the real best way to avoid malware is to just not run anything suspicious on your computer
