The bad guys disconnected their FIX connections which usually are high speed order management connections. Like high speed Algos will split trades with volumes of 10k and break them into 100 or 200 allotments and send them to various FIX connections to hide the actual size of the order.

Clients (if your FIX goes down) just switch over to another provider at a click of a button. It wasn't a big deal this time.

Connections to DTCC (the clearing corps) is funny because we're moving to T+1 (from T+2) which means losing THOSE connections mean fines from regulatory bodies.
