Judging by how people usually react to hurricanes go for the toilet paper and paper towels first. TBH it's probably too late if you wait until the disaster. Just go ahead and fill up your closet with both of those things now.

Come to think of it I better start building stock of canned foods and keep them under the bed.

But seriously, if you invest in gold for the apocalypse you'll just die with gold in your hands, that's not actually useful. Guns, food and survival things. Being able to keep yourself alive is the most valuable thing you can do for yourself.
