If it doesn't have any life then we can identify it as an object. It can be a chair or an car, well it doesn't have any life to it though. But if we talk about a living being that cannot die or has no "life" that would be in non-existence.
How do we know a chair has no life? You asked one? 
Good question, I wonder how will we get to know the answer if it has a life or not. I mean, technically a tree did eventually had a life for itself. Then after getting cut down, men then shaped it into an chair or other furniture objects.
The point is, isn't it the same wood that once had a life and maybe we killed just to use it for our daily usages? At some point it did have a life though, maybe I'm wrong?

From an scientific view-point, consciousness could be seen as a byproduct of evolution. Over millions of years, as organisms became more complex, so did their mental processes, eventually leading to the self-awareness we experience as consciousness.
Well, one could argue that consciousness is the universe's way of understanding itself, a sort of cosmic introspection?[/size]
