For the people that mentioned Signal, it's not possible to create and join public channels the same way you do on Telegram.

The advantage of Telegram is that it's possible to kind of 'create your own forum' very easily. Public groups and channels are also indexed / discoverable.

im pretty sure xmpp/jabber supports groups, just make sure youre using the off the record plugin and a server that supports it. e.g. calyxinstitute.org

Anyone knows if xmpp/jabber allow similar public group functionalities?

I'd suggest Signal, or hosting your own Matrix server (make sure to use a decent matrix client). See securemessagingapps dot com for a comparative analysis of different messaging apps.

simple x could be a good alternative. depend on how many people use it.
